English PM Spectator Races

Updates in PM

11 August 13:00: Published opening hours for info and direct entry
10 August 19:30: Some changes in starting space on Thursday's race

The spectator races consist of 6 separate races named race 1-race 6. Two races are part of the Norwegian Junior Cup, called NC1 and NC2. We’re entering the same areas as the WOC competitions and because of that some information will not be given until the day of the competition, such as direction to the start for Knatterud and Mørk.

On Mørk there will be a club tent area with shower facilities close to the car park. There are no areas for club tents inside the arena. We do however plan to put up a display with all the club flags, banners and beach flags. We urge clubs to drop off their banners and beach flags in the WOC Event Office at the arena entrance.

Map and terrain

Maps for beginner’s courses and classes up to the age of 12 are picked up at the event office/direct entry.

Race 1

Map: Sarpsborg 1:4000, 2m ISSOM 2007
Terrain description: Urban centre with a fairly simple system of squared streets. Mostly hard surface and a few parks. The city is not closed off for traffic. A construction site was to our surprise expanded after the map printing had begun. A few courses affected by this expansion will have this change handwritten on the map.
Forbidden areas: According to ISSOM 2007 any unpassable areas are forbidden.

Race 2 /NC 1

Map: Knatterudfjellet 1:10000, 5m, 1:7500, 5m, ISOM 2017-2
Terrain description: Terrain formed by the ice age with hilltops faced from north to south. Fairly steep and detailed hillsides with altitude differences of about 50 metres. Dry areas on the hilltops with open pine forest and high runnability/visibility. The valleys have denser vegetation with spruce and mixed vegetation as well, and a few marshes. Some visible signs of logging here and there.
Planted fields are forbidden areas, marked with symbol 412.

Race 3

Map: Mørk – onsdag: 1:10000, 5m, 1:7500, 5m, ISOM 2017-2
Terrengbeskrivelse: Slightly contoured terrain with many details and fairly small hight differences. Mostly good runnability and mid-level visibility. Areas with high heather occur. Pine forest on the tops and spruce/mixed vegetation in between. Few visible signs of logging. Some larger marshes. Planted fields (symbol 412) forbidden, as well as private grounds (symbol 520 olive green).

Race 4

Map: Byens Marker 1:10000, 5m, 1:7500, 5m, ISOM 2017-2
Terrain description: Urban near forest with many paths, trails and forest roads. Typical Fredrikstad terrain with low vegetation on the tops and excellent runnability. Denser vegetation in the lower areas. A total hight difference of about 30 metres. Private grounds (olive green) may be crossed in cases of coherent roads or paths crossing through. All planted fields are forbidden areas, marked on the map in violet.

Race 5/NC 2

Map: Mørk- fredag 1:15000, 5m (NC), 1:10000, 5m, 1:7500, 5m, ISOM 2017-2
Terrain description: Slightly contoured terrain with fairly small height differences. Total height difference of about 60 metres. NC courses will also encounter areas of even more contours. Mostly good runnability with mid-level viewing range. Partly high heathered. Pine forest on the tops with spruce/mixed vegetation in between in lower areas. Few visible signs of logging. A few fairly dry marshes. All courses will cross a bridge shortly before the finish to get over a river. NC courses will have several river crossings. Crossings are allowed to take part anywhere, however at runner’s own risk. We recommend both safety-wise and speed-wise to use the crossing points suggested on the map. Private grounds (symbol 520) are forbidden areas, with the exception of crossing the area through coherent roads or paths. Forbidden areas (symbol 709 violet grids) are printed on the map and in some cases marked in the terrain when necessary. Running along the edge of a planted field is only permitted when there’s a visible gap between the edge and the forbidden area on the map. (See example below).

Race 6

Map: Mørk – lørdag, 1:10000, 5m, 1:7500, 5m, 1:15 000, ISOM 2017-2
Terrain description: Slightly contoured terrain with fairly small height differences. Total height difference of about 60 metres. NC courses will also encounter areas of even more contours. Mostly good runnability with mid-level viewing range. Partly high heathered. Pine forest on the tops with spruce/mixed vegetation in between in lower areas. Few visible signs of logging. A few fairly dry marshes. All courses will cross rivers. Crossings are allowed to take part anywhere, however at runner’s own risk. We recommend both safety-wise and speed-wise to use the crossing points suggested on the map. Some smaller paths and tractor slopes on the map might be difficult to recognise in the terrain. Two paths are included in the course print, and they are marked in the terrain.

Definitions

Definitions are both printed on the map as well as loose definitions on the start.

Controls

Orange/white flags. EMIT punching units with code numbers.
NOTICE!
Controls with both EMIT touchfree and EMIT punching units may be encountered. Touchfree is not to be used in the spectator races.

Check code numbers, controls are many and tight.

Finish

For race 1, 2, 4 and NC1/NC2 the finish will be at the arena.
For race 3, 5 and 6 the control at the finish line will be at some distance from the arena. Remember to punch at the finish line! Follow marked trail back to the arena, and you’ll encounter the card reading units on the way. The runner bears responsibility to visit the reading units, and failure to do so will lead to disqualification.

Marked trails in the terrain

A few legs in the beginner’s classes will be marked with red/white plastic bands. The definition will show which legs are marked.

Norgescup junior only

All participants wear GPS tracking units. Get your GPS unit at the start. Bring your GPS vest if you have one, otherwise vests can be borrowed at the start. The announcer will follow the NC closely.

Following runners

In the beginner’s classes children may be accompanied by an adult. Extra maps for the followers can be obtained at the start (paper printed copies).

Punching system

Emit punching system. Each punching card can only be used once for each race.

Your image

Punching card

Emit cards may be equipped with backup-notes obtained at the start.

Punching is performed by placing the Emit-card on the Emit-punching unit with the backup-note facing downwards.

Your image

Punching unit

The cards have integrated time measuring, and you start measuring your time by holding your card on the unit marked 0 for the last five seconds before your start beep. Runners are responsible to perform the correct procedure, do not hesitate to ask the staff at the start if you’re in any doubt.
Controls must be punched in the given order. If you by accident should punch any invalid controls that would not be a problem as long as your actual controls are punched in the correct order. Time measurement stops as you punch the unit at the finish line, before you read the card at the race secretary’s unit and receive your leg times.
The exception from this procedure is on a mass start, where the first runner to cross a defined finish line before punching the finish unit is the winner. In case of a disqualification please report at rød sone/red zone to perform an extra check.
NOTICE! It’s very important that runners who have aborted the race reports at the finish and punch the goal line unit, as well as read the card.

Maximum time

The maximum time is limited to 1,5 hours after the final start, on race 6 the maximum time is extended to 2 hours.

Rental cards

Rental cards in individual participant envelopes which you sign out in the information tent. If you’ve entered more than one race, keep the card for the whole week. Open direct participants receive the card when entering.
The card must be returned to the information tent after you’ve finished your last race, and the receipt will be deleted. Cards not returned will be charged NOK 700.

Forbidden areas

See details for each race above. Running across forbidden areas will lead to disqualification

* NorgesCup and other class has same course

N-courses (beginners) has an obvious route choice along coherent track lines like roads, paths, creeks/ditches and fences. All controls are visible from the track lines. Suitable for anyone who is completely new to the sport or have little previous experience with orienteering.
C-courses mostly follow track lines; but runners are expected to leave the track lines occasionally. Some of the legs might have route choices.
B-courses have the runners doing the final part of the leg orienteering without track lines towards the control. An understanding of contours is needed in B-courses.
A-courses are the most challenging, and all orienteering techniques are involved.
